Why are fees increasing at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center? (1/16/2024)

Inflation is the most direct reason for increases to user fees at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center.  Waste disposal and recycling costs are continuing to increase at rates higher than inflation.  Barrington operates a Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) facility which is funded 70% by user fees so as costs increase, fees increase as well.  If user fees did not increase, a larger portion of the facility would be funded by property taxes.  Additionally, trash bag prices remained unchanged for 30 years.

At Town Meeting on March 12, 2024, residents will be asked to establish a Transfer Station and Recycling Center Revolving Fund which is part of a plan to manage escalating costs of the facility.
