Energy Committee
Welcome
In 2022, the Barrington Select Board supported the establishment of the Barrington Energy Committee, an advisory committee to the Select Board on issues related to energy conservation and efficiency.
Mission Statement
The Barrington Energy Committee’s mission is to further sustainability and livability in Barrington by promoting environmental stewardship and renewable energy, encouraging energy conservation and energy efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and encouraging green initiatives both within the municipality and beyond to reach businesses and residents.
Current Committee Goals
Public Outreach
The energy committee plans to host a button up workshop in the fall as well as host home tours of electrified homes and solar powered homes this spring. Energy efficiency information will be posted in the library.
Secure Grant Funding
Research and apply to any available state and federal grant opportunities for energy related town projects.
Municipal Facilities Planning
Take an active role in the design process for upcoming improvements to town buildings. This includes providing recommendations to reduce long term costs, improve resilience, and reduce energy consumption.
Community Power
Continue to serve as representatives for Barrington Community Power that launched in June 2024.
Collaboration with Barrington SAU
Establish a working relationship with the Barrington School System in order to jointly investigate opportunities to reduce costs, minimize energy impact, and improve the health of students. Among the areas we hope to look into are the use of heat pumps in school facilities, lighting updates to save electricity, and solar installations to reduce energy costs.
Accomplishments
2026
- Partnered with CENH and the DPW to get a Clean Diesel grant in the amount of $51,000 to help purchase a new more efficient, quieter and less polluting loader for the town .
- Hosted "Watts Happening in Barrington" a 3 home tour of energy efficient and solar powered homes right here in Barrington
- Coming soon- the Sustainability Corner at the library, and a 6 part lecture series on all things Energy!
2025
- Helped Barrington join the Poverty Plains solar project. This 5 MW solar project is projected to help earn the town $3,700 in electric bill credits, and roughly $19,600 for the SAU.
- Achieved SolSmart Gold status for the town (the highest level of any municipality in the state of New Hampshire), making it easier for businesses and residents to go solar in Barrington.
- Hosted multiple SunDay events in Barrington on 9/21/25.
- Coordinated with the Library Building Committee on energy concerns to help open our new library. The new library is a fully electric building with a large solar array, paid for with grants and donations.
- The Town Hall solar array saved the town approximately $5294
