Barrington Community Power

About Community Power

After voter approval of the Barrington Energy Aggregation Plan in March 2024 Town elections, Barrington Community Power launched in June 2024 in collaboration with the Community Power Coalition of NH (CPCNH).

The Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire (CPCNH) is a non-profit, public organization formed to help NH communities launch community power programs, share administrative resources and participate in joint electric power purchase solicitations.

Barrington Community Power Rates (February 1st, 2026 through July 31st, 2026)

From February 2026 to July 2026, Community Power rates will be 3.3¢/kWh higher than Eversource. Here's why rates are currently higher, and why staying enrolled makes sense:

Why Rates Are Higher than Eversource (for now):

  • Eversource current rates are artificially low because they haven’t caught up on past undercharges.
  • Market changes mean Eversource is buying energy differently than before, exposing them to future price volatility.
  • CPCNH has taken clear steps to prevent this from happening again, including new pricing safeguards, credit protections, and a reserve fund that will restore financial resilience within three years.
  • The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has allowed Eversource to increase rates for electricity transmission, which allows Eversource to charge less for electricity supply while maintaining the same level of revenue.

Why Community Power is the Better Option:

  • Local Projects: The Poverty Plains solar project will save the Town and School District over $20,000 a year, with more projects planned for the future to benefit all customers.
  • Choice: You can switch between CPCNH, utility default, or other providers (and back) anytime—no penalties.
  • Public Advocacy: CPCNH works to keep energy rules fair and open to innovation.
  • Clean Energy: More clean energy and smart programs such as time-of-use rates, and storage-based programs are in the works.

Bottom Line:
Temporary price shifts are normal — but Community Power offers long-term value, stronger local control, and cleaner energy options. You can opt out anytime, but we hope you’ll stay and help us build a better energy future.
