Who decides land use rules, how can I get involved? (11/19/2023)

Ultimately, residents decide land use rules by voting on the Zoning Ordinance (zoning map).  Generally, the Planning Board proposes changes to the zoning ordinance which are voted on by residents.  The Planning Board frequently recommends changes consistent with recent updates to the Master Plan.  Sometimes the changes are small/narrow and other times, most of the zoning ordinance has been re-written.  Also, residents can petition changes to the zoning ordinance.  The Planning Board also sets Subdivision/Site Review Regulations.  The Zoning Board of Adjustment considers zoning ordinance variances/exceptions.

The best way to get involved is to show up.  You can show up (virtually or in person) to a Planning Board meeting when they are discussing changes to the zoning ordinance or their regulations.  You can show up to a Master Plan update session and share your opinion.  If you have more time/availability, you can more actively participate in the process.  You can join a Master Plan chapter steering committee, you can join the Planning Board, or you can join the Zoning Board.  To learn more you can contact the Land Use Office or submit an Application for Appointment.
