What should I expect during a visit by the Town Assessor? (2/19/2024)

The Town Assessors are licensed appraisers charged with determining and updating assessed values.  There are a few reasons why the Town Assessor will visit your property.  The first thing they will do when they arrive is try to make contact with a property owner.

If they make contact, they will explain the reason for their visit and ask permission to inspect the property.  They will observe the property, take measurements, and look for features/depreciation which are not accurately reflected on the property record card.  Most inspections take less than 15 minutes.

If no one is home, no one answers the door, or it is not a good time for an inspection, they will leave you with a yellow door hanger which asks you to contact the Assessing Office (603-664-0241 or assessing@barrington.nh.gov) to schedule an appointment for an interior inspection.  After leaving a door hanger, the Town Assessor may perform a visual inspection of the exterior of the property and take measurements to update the property record card.  The Town Assessor is responsible for maintaining assessed values on over 5,000 parcels and collecting all the data they can during any visit is the most efficient (and cost effective) way to do so.  If you would prefer that the Town Assessor not visit your property when you are not home, you may clearly mark your property 'No Trespassing'.
